Painter in his Workshop
Stock 10829. Oil on canvas, signed by the artist Andre Mahieu, 1904-1979, and dated '71 lower right. Like many Belgian artists, Mahieu was something of a gypsy. After leaving art school in 1925 he moved to Zaire, worked and exhibited in Leopoldville, Congo. His African works achieve $5,000 and more at auction. Subsequently he returned to Belgium, settling in Brugge. This work, late in his career is pure, good impressionism. It is a bit later than most works we sell but very pleasing.
